BMT Program receives 2009 Award for Disaster Response Preparedness

The University of Minnesota Medical Center supports disaster response not only locally, but nationwide. The Blood and Marrow Transplant Program has received a 2009 certificate of appreciation from the U.S. Department Health and Human Services. The certificate recognizes the BMT Program's participation as a founding member of the Radiation Injury Treatment Network (RITN) .

The BMT Program serves as one of a number of primary transplant centers across the country that will coordinate with RITN to provide treatment and evaluation for victims of radiation exposure or other marrow toxic injuries.  These victims may require treatment to support blood cell recovery or blood or marrow transplants.

As a charter RITN member, the BMT program has participated in local as well as national and international disaster drills, policy development and planning. Our program stands ready to help in the event of such a disaster.
